I'm briefly going to go into some of the key things that were mentioned in the announcement article which you can read HERE.
New Keywords
One of the new fascinating things was the addition of some new keywords. The first of these is Alpha. Alpha is a new keyword on a card which dictates that in order to get it to trigger, you'll have to play it first in your turn. This keyword is then twined with Omega which (as you might have guessed) must be played as the last card on your turn in order to get its effect. It will also immediately finish your turn, so whilst they might be powerful cards you'll have to work out if playing them is worth you potentially having quite short turns.
The last of the new keywords is Deploy. Deploy breaks the rule for placement of creatures in KeyForge by allowing you to drop them into the middle of your battleline if you wish. They will most likely have good abilities which warrant you wanting to do this, and it's a step in the right direction as they bring new tactics into play.
The Competitive Edge
Most other card games might suffer from a sense of power creep with each new expansion. Each one that comes out makes one new faction better or helps to balance them all and in doing so tweaks the meta. If you don't have the new cards then you're unlikely to be able to stand your ground against new decks with their new cards and mechanics in effect. So, why is KeyForge potentially different? Well, Fantasy Flight Games have said that all of your Call Of The Archon decks are going to still be effective against those from Age Of Ascension. The proof is in the pudding of course but I see a reason why this might be the case.
In KeyForge your deck is an engine (be it effective or not) that is built to work regardless of the opponent's deck. If your engine runs well from Call Of The Archons then the likelihood is it's going to be fine against whatever the new decks might have to offer.
Because each deck doesn't really interact with the other, we should be fine. You're not taking a deck that has 'x' card included because you know it beats some meta defining tactic the opponent has developed. A KeyForge deck is, as stated before, it's own engine and as long as you've mastered it you should be fine!
New Art & Stories
I've recently been reading about the background to KeyForge (which you can find HERE) and I have to say, I'm getting more and more excited for Age Of Ascension. As much as I want to see the new combinations coming into effect I'm very much on board for seeing the new artwork by their suite of talented contributors AND the additional story that might come to the fore.I still think that Fantasy Flight Games have hit the nail on the head with KeyForge and I can't wait to play more of it.
